Building Strong Families Newsletter

A newsletter from Building Strong Families, Inc.

And Dr. Pauline M. Rivers

February 2019

Hello Friends!  We are long overdue to check in with you, to let you know how we’re doing, what we have coming, and just to let you know that you are always at the forefront of our thinking and planning.  We are always looking for ways to serve you.  In fact, November 2019 marks our 5-year anniversary!  We were incorporated in 2014 with one over-riding purpose:  to provide practical tools, strategies and resources to strengthen families to help them be great! So, happy anniversary Building Strong Families, Inc.!

You have helped us have another great year in 2019! We hosted the Women of Worth Conference and Brunch and you showed up over 130 strong!  Thank you for your support.  It blesses us.  We also hosted the Youth Strategies for Success Workshop focusing on helping our youth learn strategies for getting a job and keeping it!  And, we held the Men of Courage Seminar (something for the brothers!) and the one that started it all—the Healing Emotional Wounds Seminar.  Our women’s support group, Time with My Sisters, continues to provide an intimate, relaxing and safe environment for women to gather.  It is really something special….

We also welcomed a new board member, Mrs. Maritza Acosta.  We’re so excited to have her join us.  So, whenever you see her at one of our events, please say “hello” and help her feel welcomed to Team Building Strong Families!

We’re excited about 2020!  We always believe for an Ephesians 3:20 year—exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think.  And, we are thinking big!  We have a vision for expansion and look to add some new programs and extend our reach.

We can only do what we do because you support us.  So, thank you…As often as you think of us, please remember to pray for us….

Communicate Well!

One of the greatest gifts that I have received as a mom is when one of my sons said, “I’m blessed to have the kind of parents that we have, that we can talk to about anything.”  My son said that he was blessed, but really, that blessed me, more than just about anything that I can think of.  But honestly, for all of us, getting there—to that place where we communicate well with each other within our families--comes with hard work, and it comes from making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, and being committed to getting better.  It comes from a commitment to work hard at listening—to stop what I’m doing, turn away from the computer or the TV, focus on my sons when they’re talking to me, to show them that I’m interested in what they have to say, to bite my tongue (sometimes literally) and listen without judging, without criticizing, and without jumping in too quickly with advice.  It is learning to speak the right word, in the right way, at the right time, realizing that “right now” isn’t always the right time.  It’s hard work! But, learning to communicate well is one of the greatest tools that a family can have and one of the best gifts we can ever give to our families….

Be blessed and be well!
